5.0 von 5 Sternen Fleißarbeit, die sich gelohnt hat!

    6. April 2013 Von Leon Mengden

In the 1930s it was important to have a liaison aircraft that was able to take off and land in a short distance while operating from a variety of surfaces. In the US and Britain, these planes were generally rather large and so were somewhat limited in short take off and landing abilities. Later, both countries eventually went with standard light aircraft such as the Piper Cub or Stinson Voyager to fill those roles.

However, the real 'ace' of short landing and take off was the German Fieseler Fi-156 'Storch'. It was able to land in about 40 meters and take off in not that much more space. This was thanks to the light weight, relatively long wings and full span slats and flaps. It was said that if the wind was strong enough, it could take off and land almost vertically.

It was a huge hit with the Luftwaffe and with those who not only flew but also flew in the aircraft. Probably one of its most acknowledged missions was when it was used to fly Mussolini out of his mountain prison in the Italian Alps. It also was used to fly out some top Nazi officials from Berlin in the last days of the war.

So well regarded was the aircraft that many Allied officers used captured Storches for their own personal aircraft. The aircraft was built in France as well in the Morane-Saulnier plant and production continued, though with different engines after the war. It was also exported to a number of nations, including the Swiss and the Swedes.

This new book in MMP's Yellow series takes a look at the design and development of the Fi-146 from the initial design through the design competition, production and modifications until the last one rolled off the production lines. The aircraft saw service on every front in which the Germans fought and was built not only in France, but also in Japan. Within the book's 176 pages is a complete rundown on the aircraft and its different variants, complete with descriptions of the differences between them. The history section covers the use of the aircraft both by the Axis, Allies and neutral nations.

A few of these planes are still flying and some are in museums around the world with some being original Fieseler aircraft and others made by Morane-Saulnier. Both museum and warbird aircraft are included in the details area and this includes period images and pages from the maintenance manuals to give even greater insight into this fighter. There are also a goodly number of the color profiles we have all come to expect from MMP books. As an added bonus, there are scale plans included in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/35 scale, the latter two provided as huge foldouts that provided additional detail drawings.

Overall, it is a most complete look at one of the world's more interesting aircraft. A book that continues the excellence of MMP products and one that I can highly recommend to you.

A great modellers book but not good as a definitive reference work 18 July 2012

    By C. Simmonds

I received my copy of this eagerly awaited book early this morning, and I will a give a first impression review.

Firstly the book is lliterally filled with very well produced images some of which a few are new (to me at least). Also superbly clear profiles fill the book cover to cover. There is also an extensive if not in great depth review of foreign axis and allied users. Claiming at least 50% of the book and aimed primarily at the modeller most of the later high quality colour images show in very great detail the form of extant and preserved examples of the plane. Loose at the back, which I guess would be very useful for the modeller are 1/72nd 1/48th and 1/35th scale plans. Overall the reproduction of the book can only be described as very high quality with great care being taken on the tonal values of the black and white images. Other publishers should emulate this quality as a standard.

Well those are the good points and they are very good. Personally I really loathe the Mushroom format which squashes images and profiles down into the centre spine. Generally many of the images to the front of the book are small and cramped because of this format. Mushroom better to have at leats A4 size and expand all the sizes of your images.

Lastly if you are looking for an extensive history of the Storch and all the units that used it you will be very disappointed: this is a book for modellers with enthusiasts a poor second. I gave this five stars for modellers but would only have given two stars as a reference work.

    Review

I’ve just read the ideal modeler’s reference for TAMIYA’s superb 1:48-scale Storch.

MMP’s marvelously meticulous Fieseler Fi 156 Storch packs everything you need into one amazingly handy handbook. Nothing tops this compact, convenient compendium for thoroughness.

Born to a 1935 Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM) specification, Fiesler’s remarkable design mixed innovative lifting devices with rugged construction for sensational STOL performance. The legendary 3-seat liaison machine could fly – and alight – almost anywhere. And some claim it required just its length to land!

After a concise chronicle of Fi 156 design and development, MMP’s coverage turns, country-by-country to Storch users – including local production in Czechoslovakia and France. Author Karnas highlights every variant and every epoch – including postwar service. Aircraft details – including color photos of preserved examples and excerpts from Luftwaffe technical manuals – devour nearly half the book.

Dozens of inspirational profiles and archival shots season sections. Tables and specifications enrich text. And 1:72, 1:48, and 1:32 plans – including a large-scale pull-out page – distill Storch details.

This terrific little tome certainly seized pride of place among my Luftwaffe references!

    Robustly recommended.

The Fieseler Storch is both known and unknown. Known for its recognizable silhouette which is so familiar to anyone who is interested in World War II and the Luftwaffe. unknown because books on this airplane are rather inexistent. So we can only enjoy to see Mushroom to have taken the initiative to publish a book on this aircraft. Published in the ’yellow’ series, it contains all the elements that has made this collection successful, namely an introduction, presentation of all versions, the military users during the war, plus a chapter on the production in France and Czechoslovakia and projects that didn’t come to light, not counting of course the technical and numerous photographs of close-ups of aircraft museums giving much valuable information to modelers along with numerous profiles that can give good ideas for interesting markings.

However some shortcomings must be noticed, such as the absence of the French military use of Storch before the end of the war in Europe, constituting a major omission. Also, it would have been interesting to know more details about the career of aircraft museum shown in this book. That said and despite this, this book remains a source of first choice for anyone who wants to learn more about the Storch and its use during the war.

This book contains all a modeler would need to build and super detail a model of the Storch in any scale. The book also includes scale plans in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/35. These plans were first rate.

The first 62 pages cover the basics of each and every variant of the Storch. The next 30 pages cover each of the many non-German operators of the type, also including those captured examples that were operated by both the United Kingdom and the USA. Even Gen. Eisenhower had one for his personal use. The many color profiles of these non-German Storchs help provide many alternate paint schemes to the modeler. The next 10 or so pages cover the technical description and the camouflage and markings.

The final section includes many color photos of both aircraft preserved in museums and flying examples. The photos cover every angle and look into every nook and cranny on the aircraft and provided information on even the smallest details.

This is another fine book from this publisher. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this particular aircraft as well as to anyone even thinking about building a model of the Storch. It will be a big help to you and you can’t really go wrong with this one. Money well spent.

Great book but a questionable editorial decision, August 1, 2012

    By Jim Davis

This book is consistent in format with the others in MMP's Yellow Series, of which this is the 31st (No. 6131). It is a square bound, 6-1/2" x 9", 176 page, card cover with color throughout. There is an unbound foldout (more about this later) so if buying secondhand make sure this is included.

The book has all the features we've come to expect of these MMP books. There is an informative text detailing the background, design, development, and service history of the aircraft. Although postwar production and service in France are mentioned the focus is exclusively on the prewar and wartime service in Germany and its allies - and enemies. Especially interesting are the competing designs and the prewar appearances at airshows and exhibitions. The follow on Fi 256 also gets some attention. There are also sections with a comprehensive technical description and the various markings carried. The text is ably supplemented with lots of black and white photos, 1/72nd scale plans, and tables.

Then there is a section which features full color, up close photos of preserved aircraft supplemented by some contemporary technical literature and some modern drawings commissioned for this book. Lots and lots of details that both modellers and general enthusiasts will appreciate.

There are also many color profile drawings which, for the first time in an MMP book, are scattered throughout the book where appropriate instead of being collected at the rear.

Finally, there is the unbound foldout which has 1/48th scale drawings on one side and 1/35th (sic!) scale drawings on the other. They are indeed 1/35th scale, I measured. This seems an inexplicable decision but I can't see any way the standard 1/32nd scale drawings could have been made to fit. No doubt the editors figured 1/35th scale was better than none at all. Not being a modeller I can't really say I'm unduly bothered. Modellers, of course, might see things differently. I always had the impression that the Storch was a small aircraft but it needed a big wing liberally adorned with high lift devices to achieve its legendary take off and landing runs. That big wing no doubt gave the editors fits. *

There are a few other minor glitches. There are sentences repeated in one place and the line drawings labeled Fi 156C-2 are clearly the C-3 subtype.

Highly recommended. I especially enjoy books that cover the more neglected types at this one hit that spot nicely.

    *Editor note.

We included 1/35 scale planes because there is a very good model in this scale by Tristar!

    Review By Ray Mehlberger

Mushroom Model Publications (MMP) is based in the UK. They have all their books printed in Poland by their associate Stratus in Sandomierz. These are done in the English language. Stratus also does a line of their own book in both Polish and English. This new book was sent to me directly from Stratus, heavily wrapped in layers of cardboard along with a second MMP book.

The Fiesler Fi-156 Storch (Stork) was a German liason aircraft built before and during WWII, and even post war in France. It remains famous to this day for its excellent STOL performance and remarkable wartime exploits. The qualities of the aircraft were appreciated by both sides, the Russians building a close copy and all Allied forces making use of captured examples.

This book describes in detail the technical aspects of the aircraft, its design and development. All wartime versions are described and illustrated in detail, including armed and ambulance versions.

The book is soft-cover and 176 pages in 6 ½” x 9” page format. It contains 17 1/72nd scale line drawings in the book and more along with 1/35th and 1/48th scale ones on an inserted loose large sheet. Neat!

There are 179 color photos, most of which are walk-around shots of surviving examples in various museums. Included are another 102 photos in black and white (some of these are rare). There are 73 superb full color profile illustrations of camouflage and markings, covering all major users of the type (some are 2 or 3-views). Twenty-six more illustrations are out of tech manuals. There is one data chart and one illustration of a poster about the Storch.

This has got to be the definitive book on the Storch and will prove to be essential reading for aviation historians, enthusiasts and scale modelers.

    Very highly recommended !

While much attention is given to the fast and aggressive fighters of the Second World War, some of the more interesting subjects come from the slow, plodding types. Such is the case with the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, a liaison aircraft dating back to the 1930s. Its excellent Short Takeoff & Landing (STOL) capabilities and stable handling made it a very popular aircraft for everyone. So much so that captured examples were flown extensively and production continued in France after the war until the 1960s.

This newest title in the Mushroom Model Publications' Yellow Series provides us with a thorough examination of the Fieseler Fi 156 (just the Fieseler version; for those wanting information on the post-war Morane Saulnier production you'll have to look elsewhere). As is becoming common with Mushroom Model Publications' books as of late, this one includes 1/72 drawings printed in the pages and larger scale drawings on a separate pull-out sheet. This time, we get both 1/48 and 1/35 scales on that larger sheet, providing plenty of details for whatever your scale of choice is.

The Yellow Series is designed to describe the technical details of an aircraft, and this one is no exception. The book goes into great detail into the construction and variant differences, with the only operation notes provided anecdotally. The book also covers the foreign operators of the Fieseler Storch, of which there were quite a few. Photos are plentiful, and the color illustrations highlight many of the interesting schemes and markings worn by the Fi 156.

This is an excellent book to have for anyone interested in the Fieseler Storch and just how all the different variants were laid out.

What connects Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, General de Gaulle, Field Marshall Montgomery, Benito Mussolini, Chiang Kai-shek, and Dwight D Eisenhower? They have all flown as passengers in a Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, the original STOL aircraft and one which proved to be a great favourite by all flew it, or in it as a passenger.

Under my user name of 'sparbucks' on the Scale Plastic and Rail website forum, it states quite correctly that I am a Luftwaffe addict. In the 1970's I was living in the High Wycombe area of Buckinghamshire and reasonably close to the airfield known at that time as RAF Booker. The RAF had long gone but there were a few a few private companies occupying the old hangars, the airfield was a very busy glider venue and private airstrip. One of those companies was Personal Plane Services run by Doug and Tony Bianchi which had some wonderful privately owned 'vintage' aircraft to maintain, of which one was a Morane Saulnier built Fi 156 Fieseler Storch. This was often seen gracing the Buckinghamshire skies and was the aircraft responsible for initiating my interest in the German aircraft of World War II. So much so, I obtained a set of (I believe 1/8) scale plans and made a radio controlled version with operating flaps, ailerons, rudder and elevator plus throttle control of course.

Doug and Tony allowed me to visit the hangar on a number of occasions to measure this and that and to take a few photographs - a great help to my build. To see this aircraft up close and personal was a privilege - and even more so to see it fly. Magnificent!

I am relatively new to plastic modelling, but what got me into it was the release by Tamiya of their beautifully presented 100th aircraft kit – the 1/48 scale Fieseler Storch – I suppose that must be about 5 years ago now. This aircraft has a lot to answer!

I was therefore very pleased to see Dariusz Karnas' book on the Fieseler Storch arrive on my doorstep courtesy of Dr Roger Wallsgrove, the Editor in Chief of MMP Books. Those of you haven't visited Roger's website www.mmpbooks.biz are missing something when it comes to reference material and Roger is often seen manning his stand at model shows where he always a vast selection of books to browse.

This book, a softback, has 176 pages and for anyone interested in the Storch or World War II aircraft generally, is a must for reference material. It contains no less than 279 photographs in its 'action packed' pages, many I haven't seen before, and some of which are original colour shots from World War II. In addition, as it says on the cover of the book, there are scale plans in 1/72 (in the pages of the book) and a separate pull out sheet with 1/48 scale drawings printed on one side and 1/35 (yes, 1/35) printed on the other. I would have preferred to see 1/32 of course, but having said that I have built the Tristar kit which is in 1/35 scale and, for the unwary, as I was, has incorrect Italian wing motif decals, grr!

Following the book's Introduction, there are fourteen sections detailing the different types of Storch from the Design and Development stage to the Fi 256 prototypes. This takes you to approximately half way through this very informative book! The remainder of the book is a Storch modeller's dream, with a seemingly endless supply of reference photographs and walk-around shots. How I wish this book had been available in the 1970's!

Looking for a different scheme for one of those beautiful Tamiya kits you have in that stash in the loft? This publication has 57 colour profiles – take your pick! I was quite taken with one of the Rumanian schemes and the D-Day striped American version looked very tasty too!

    So what do we think?

I love the Storch, and to date, I have built five in different scales with a few more in the stash. One thing is for certain, this book is going nowhere. It will be the first to come to hand when I get around to the next Fizzy. Excellent value for money, in my view.

    Highly recommended.

Our thanks to Dr. Roger Wallsgrove of MMP Books for the review sample.

I would highly recommend this book for Storch enthusiasts. The 176 page book contains a pull out 3-view in the various popular plastic modeling scales, numerous color renderings of various schemes, both period B&W and color photographs of existing aircraft and line drawings and close up photographs of various details on the aircraft. The cockpit shots are worth the price alone as many are of very nicely and accurately restored aircraft and the shots themselves are of rarely seen, hard to get details. There is even a page devoted to the MG-15, the Storch's wartime armament. Just be careful to weed out modern avionics and equipment in the color photos if you are building a period correct model. The book contains information on all the significant Storch variants, including equipment specific to these and even has a page and photographs of Fieseler's later Fi-256, a rarely acknowledged aircraft. Although published in 2012 in Poland, it is written in clear and correct English throughout. As you might have guessed, I am a student of the Storch and have most of what has been published previously on the aircraft. This work is right up there with the top 1-2 publications that I already have.

A recent addition to MMP’s Yellow Series books that focus in detail on a specific aircraft type, this title will be of great use to anyone who wants to model or is otherwise interested in the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch. Don’t be deceived by the book’s compact format: its 176 pages are packed with a well-balanced selection of text and illustrations that provides a near one-stop reference on the Storch.

The book is structured as follows:

Development of the Storch, from the first prototype to the main production variants. Several experimental versions are also discussed. Good use is made of period photos, colour profiles and line drawings to highlight the differences between variants.

Foreign operators and production – a detailed description of the Storch’s use by countries other than Germany (I counted at least 15). For me, this variety of marking choices is one of the great attractions of modeling the Storch, and the illustrations in this section include some very tempting aircraft.

Technical description – this section is brief but thorough, and supported by a number of useful scrap drawings.

Storch camouflage and markings in Luftwaffe service.

The Storch in detail – over 60 pages of full-colour walkaround photographs of surviving aircraft. The photos are of good quality and, used in conjunction with the technical and period illustrations elsewhere in the book, will be invaluable for anyone who wants to add extra detail to their model.

A separate fold out sheet (eight times larger than the book itself) of Storch plans. One side has four-view plans in 1/35 scale, while the other side has five-view plans in 1/48 scale (the additional illustration is a front view of an Fi 156 C-2).

The overall quality of the publication is very good. The writing is straightforward and easy to read, and the illustrations are well chosen and clearly reproduced. The book’s small size should also make it easy to handle on the workbench.

    Conclusion

This book is an essential guide to arguably the best-known liaison aircraft of World War 2. Aimed specifically at modelers, its wealth of information should answer most questions that arise in the course of a build. The illustrations are a particular high point, while the fold-out plans are a bonus that will be useful in comparing differences between various production models.

    Highly recommended.
