The latest installment of the Yellow Series from Mushroom Model Publications is devoted to the iconic Mig-15. This book clearly is written with the modeler in mind, as well over 100 pages are devoted to pictures, drawings or color profiles of the airplane.

The book is divided in the following sections

    Introduction

    Development

    Development Versions

    Series Productions of the Mig-15

    Production in other countries

    Detail photos

    Fuselage

    Wing

    Cockpit and Canopy

    Undercarriage

    Engine

    Armament

    Color Profiles (69 of them)

The first few sections are concise in detail (mainly what was changed in each development version) and most of the versions have an associated 72nd scale line drawing, or at least those that had an external modification.

The Series Production and Production in other countries chapters covers details of all the versions and sub-versions (quantity, location, factory, etc.) produced in the former Soviet Union and under license. Of particular interest are some versions that were only produced outside the Soviet Union and either pictures or line drawings are available for them.

The real “meat” of this book is the walk-around section, whit about 120 pictures in full color and covering every detail I could think of. In addition to the pictures there are line drawings, 3D renders and sketches of the different sub-structures.

And to top it off there are the 69 full color profiles, some of them for very little know Air Forces that would certainly get your modelling juices going.

You can see a 4 minutes video (displaying all the pages of the book) at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQSQbft_h7Y

The very last page of the book has a comparison line drawing of the Mig-15 and the Mig-15bis, which is very interesting.

Mushroom Model Publications has delivered another jewel. Highly recommended to modelers interested in the soviet early jet era.

    Monograph

Even by the high standards set by Mushroom Model Publications, this is an exceptional book. It has 152 pages, exceptional color photographs, a veritable horde (40 pages) of color profiles from Air Forces all over the world, plus scale plans and other goodies you’d expect from Mushroom. If you have any interest in the MiG-15, you’ll want this book.

    Recommendation

As a modeler thinking about building a MiG-15 or as an aerial historian interested in this “Sputnik” of Soviet jet fighters, this book is for you. The plane has an exceptional role in post-war history, creating (with the F-86) a sense of razor’s edge balance between the two competing superpowers. In short, if you’ve got any interest in the era or the aircraft,

This book is broken down thusly:

    Series Productions of the Mig-15

    Fuselage

    Wing

    Cockpit and Canopy

    Engine

    Armament

    Color Profiles

The first part of the book deals with the history of the type, outlining all versions of the MiG-15. Each section, when warranted, also contains a 1/72 drawing showing the difference with that specific subtype of the MiG-15. Once you get through the history section, then you get to the reason why this is an excellent resource for the modeler. That is because the rest of the book contains very detailed walk-around photos of the LIM-built, Polish version of the MiG-15. The types were close enough that this section is perfect for the MiG-15 modeler.

In fact, I would venture to say that if you need this book if you model the MiG-15 in any fashion. Granted, I have no other references on the MiG-15 but this one feels like it's "enough" to make most modelers happy.

I like everything about this book and can't recommend it highly enough. But there are drawings that really shine for me, those being the last ones in the book showing the exact differences between the MiG-15 and MiG-15bis. Excellent!

There's only one thing missing, I feel, and that's something I haven't seen yet, anywhere. That one thing is photos of MiG-15s carrying bombs. I have yet to see photos of such a set-up.

In a brilliant diplomatic coup, the Soviet Union’s acquisition of 55 Rolls-Royce Nene jet engines from the newly elected post war English Labor government gave the Communist giant an unprecedented boost in engine technology.

The modified engine, mated to a superb airframe by Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich, produced a world class interceptor to rival anything the West could produce. vThis second edition of the MMP book covers 152 pages and is jam packed with useful information and airframe details. The walk around section for example, includes 197 photos covering every aspect of the aircraft. Indeed, this photo essay is so complete you would be hard pressed to want anything more.

Anyone wanting a unique marking choice is well served by this publication as the 72 side profiles provide a wealth of painting inspiration for anyone attempting either the single or dual seat versions of this aircraft.

I like the MMP range of books. They offer the modeller a wealth of information in a manageable package. This really is a “one stop shop” for 99% of modellers out there.

    Highly recommended
